This bear is a part of a big collection of vintage mohair teddy bears. It measures almost 24 cm or app 9,5" . It has velvet nose and a red fabric tongue stiched to its mouth. This bear have amber glass eyes which means it was made in the 50s or early 60s. The head is firmly stuffed with excelsior. The bear is not jointed.
This vintage pure wool teddy bear is in very good condition. Still has the tag 'PURE WOOL' on his arm/paw.

It took me long time to identify where these bears came from but finally I got the answer. They were bought from West Germany so I thought they are German made. But later I found out their story.

These bears were prodused by Shanghai Dolls Factory around the 60s from 100% wool.

After WWII Asian stuffed toys began to appear in North America and Western Europe. One of the more popular/prolific brands was the Shanghai Dolls Factory or SDF.

Teddy Bears and other soft toys were made out of dense pure wool, a plush similar to mohair plush but not quite as soft. Wool plush was a cheaper natural plush to manufacture. Shanghai Dolls Factory stuffed toys were at the peak of their popularity from the late 1950s into the early 1970s. It is not known when imports stopped or when manufacture may have ceased.

Early bears, bunnies and other stuffed toys were made with stitched noses, or molded rubber noses and glass eyes. Later, plastic safety eyes came into use and noses were made from molded plastic rather than rubber.

Being made from natural wool, there can be rubbing wear or moth damage to the plush. The fabric backing becomes visible in these bald spots. This one is in very good condition, no fur loses.

Please note that this is NOT A TOY. It is a collectors item.
